Types of Deadlocks for Doors
Hook bolt deadlocks are used on narrow storefronts made of aluminum sliding doors to enhance lock strength and security. The locks are keyed on both sides for greater flexibility in access control.

Cylindrical Latch
Cylindrical locks are commonly used for doors in the interior. They are used in offices and homes and are able to be used in a wide range of applications. Cylindrical locks function similarly to mortise lock systems but are much simpler and quicker to install. They don't require an opening pocket, or "mortise," to be cut into the door's frame like mortise lock systems do. They are simply inserted in the hole, or bore, that is cut into the door's frame. They are available in various grades and are compatible with both knobs and levers to shut and open the door.
The primary difference between mortise and cylinder locks is that these locks are only opened with the right type of key. The pins are secured by springs and pins with different heights. Once the correct key has been inserted, the pins will align with each other and allow the cylinder to turn. This allows the latch bolt to retract, and the door can be opened.
When the wrong key has been put in, the pins aren't aligned correctly, which stops the cylinder moving. This is why it's important to select the correct key whenever you want to enter your home or business.
The cylinder is situated inside the door's body and is connected to the operating trim by a square or a half-round extension. The cylinder also has small notch on its side that are designed to be aligned with the key notches when the correct key is inserted. This type of lock is controlled with the key on the outside and a knob or lever on the inside. It is typically used in areas where the use of the lock is not an issue, such as office doors. This type of lock permits the outside lever to be in a locked or unlocked position and the inside knob/lever is always open for immediate exit. The key is only needed to retract the latchbolt once the door is closed.
The pins of a key-lock are aligned and pointed at a point called the shearline. The pins are aligned with the shearline once the key that is needed is placed into the lock. The plug can then be turned to release latchbolt. If you've ever encountered keys that fit perfectly into a lock but still won't open it could be due to one of the pins isn't aligned with the shear line.
Some locks also come with a face plate, which is affixed to the door's edge and can be decorative as well as add protection and security to the locking mechanism. It's common to see these plates on mortice locks as well as rim locks with reversed spring bolts.
There is also a strike plate that is typically connected to the jamb and frame of the door and has a hole that guides the bolt from the cylinder into the lock. This is often utilized together with deadbolts to provide additional security.
The cylinder is the final component, and it is a home for pins that are aligned with the key's edge to stop it from turning.
